No matter how smart you think you are, the average person’s attention span is very short. We as humans like think of something different every 8 seconds; whether that be food, sports, clothes, girlfriend, girlfriend’s friends, girlfriend’s mum etc…
What should you be doing during your break? – Anything but work.
- Stay away from the screen (including the smartphone!)
- Go for a walk around the office or up and down the stairs.
- Get a glass of water and start a brief chat with someone.
- Stand up and stretch.
- Look at a magazine.
- Draw something out the window.
The main aim is to simply not concentrate for a while. Deliberately turning off your concentration is very relaxing. Your brain will thank you.
How often should you break? – Every 50-90 minutes. Taking a break after 90 minutes of sold work will act as a positive reinforcement for yourself. So a break will act as a mini-reward.
How long should your break be? – 10-20 minutes. Not too short and not too long; that is the key. You are your own boss when it comes to the duration, so be disciplined. When time is up - Time is up!
What does a break do? -Taking a break is essential throughout the day. So being distracted is not necessarily a bad thing. Thinking and doing something different during your break will help stimulate your brain, and help you lead to higher productivity, concentration and energy levels.
Making you more likely to :)
